It’s been less than a month since Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident, casting doubt on his ability to once-more kickstart his illustrious pro golf career.
No matter what happens in the realm of 3D, Tiger isn’t finished.
Yesterday Tiger announced a long-term partnership with Two-Two interactive — the video game publisher behind Grand Theft Auto — that will bring Tiger back to the virtual links.
Take Two With Take-Two
From 1998 to 2013, Woods was the face of Electronic Arts’ PGA Tour video game series. Well-known for its marquee franchises like FIFA and Madden, EA has long-dominated the sports video game market — but it hasn’t released a new golf game since 2015.
Take-Two, on the other hand, created somewhat of a twosome with Canadian game maker “HB Studios” in 2018. The pairing rolled-out PGA TOUR 2K21 last August, which has already sold nearly two million units.
With the Tiger deal inked, momentum is building for PGA TOUR 2K22:
- Terms of the partnership were not disclosed, but Take-Two will have the right to use Tiger’s name and likeness (a coup because, unlike in the NBA and NFL, PGA Tour athletes control their own names and likenesses).
- Woods will also serve as an executive director and consultant for the franchise.
- As part of the transaction, Take-Two is also acquiring HB Studios.
Ace in the console: According to NPD Group, golf was the sixth-most popular video game sport in the U.S. over the last decade.
